Service Description

Workshop/Course Description: This individualized consultation and training session is designed to communicate therapeutically-aligned standards for professional decision making when working in Mental Health settings. Interpreters who currently work in mental health settings, from outpatient peer-led support groups to emergency and long-term hospital-based commitment settings, face challenges which are often beyond the scope of a non-mental health setting. This unique individualized training opportunity provides participants with professional standards of practice using the Well-Rounded Wheel of Mental Health Interpreting. It allows participants to explore and increase awareness of biases, judgments and sensitivities as well as develop self-management strategies in the presense of heightened emotions. The individual nature of this training provides a unique opportunity to discuss personal history and professional experiences that might be uncomfortable to share in a group setting. Educational Objectives • Participants will discuss multiple interpreting approaches mentioned in the RID Standard Practice Paper on Mental Health Interpreting. • Participants will discuss the importance of defining and maintaining personal boundaries in mental health settings. • Participants will discuss the importance of communicating with mental health providers. • Participants will be able to name the three main topic areas where interpreter input to providers is recommended. • Participants will discuss the importance of defining their professional and personal values as a means to reduce vulnerability to vicarious trauma.
